About

ADRIAN STENNING BSc (Hons) FRICS

Adrian completed an Honours Degree in Quantity Surveying at Portsmouth prior to joining Bare, Leaning & Bare in 1987. He began working with historic buildings at this point and began his long relationship with the Landmark Trust and their historic properties. He qualified as a Professional Associate of the RICS in 1990 and was elected Fellow of the RICS in 1999. He rose through Associate status to become a full Partner in 1997. In 2009, following the Practice’s merger with Synergy LLP, he left to set up his own Practice, Stenning & Co Ltd, to continue active involvement with historic building work.

Adrian specialises extensively and almost exclusively in the repair and conservation of historic buildings. Projects have ranged from work upon classical architectural buildings, five Cathedrals and over 100 Churches through to vernacular timber framed barns as well as associated modern buildings. He has extended his Quantity Surveying background and acts as Project Manager and/or Contract Administrator on a number of projects. His experience has also led to his involvement in a number of Public Inquiries where his advice has been relied upon as an Expert Witness.

His surveying experience with Historic Buildings has been recognised by the RICS by his inclusion upon their Register of Surveyors Accredited in Building Conservation Work since its inception. He became Chairman of the RICS Conservation Forum Board for a three year fixed term having previously sat on the Board for several years and continues to be engaged in promoting good practice and philosophy across the spectrum of conservation. He has just completed his sixth year as one of the national judges for the RICS Awards, being the specialist for the Building Conservation category.

Adrian was nominated to become a member of the Association for Studies in the Conservation of Historic Buildings (ASCHB) and was elected as a member in 1998. He has lectured on Quantity Surveying with reference to Historic Buildings at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies in York, for the Society for Protection of Ancient Building (SPAB), at Bath University as part of their MSc in Building Conservation, as part of the College of Estate Managements Course at Reading and on specifying conservation works at West Dean College
